King Leopold's Soliloquy

1905 · 20th century

King Leopold's Soliloquy is a satirical pamphlet by Mark Twain, published in 1905 in support of the Congo Reform Association. Written as a rambling monologue in which Leopold II defends his rule of the Congo Free State, it quotes the evidence against him and includes photographs of mutilated Congolese, mocking the king's claim of humanitarian purpose.
