Kittur Chennamma
Kittur Chennamma was queen of Kittur, a small Lingayat state in northern Karnataka. When the East India Company refused to recognise her adopted son under the doctrine of lapse, she led an armed revolt in 1824 and her forces killed the British collector at Kittur. Captured after a second campaign, she died in prison at Bailhongal and is honoured as an early resister of British rule.
