Adil Shahi dynasty

1490–1686 · 15th century · Also known as Bijapur Sultanate

The Adil Shahi dynasty ruled the Bijapur Sultanate in the western Deccan from 1490, when Yusuf Adil Shah broke away from the Bahmani Sultanate, until the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb took Bijapur in 1686. Its sultans built the Gol Gumbaz and other monuments. Many Maratha and Lingayat families, among them the Bhonsles, served it as commanders and revenue holders before founding their own states.
