Bhonsles
The Bhonsles were a Maratha clan to which Shivaji, founder of the Maratha state, belonged. A branch of the family ruled Nagpur in central India as one of the great semi-independent Maratha houses, alongside the Gaekwads, Holkars and Scindias. Rivalry among these chiefs after 1740 weakened central authority and contributed to the decline of the Maratha Empire.
