Pratapgad

1656 · 17th century

Pratapgad is a hill fort in the Satara district of Maharashtra, western India, built in 1656 on the orders of Shivaji to guard the passes of the Western Ghats. Below its walls in November 1659 Shivaji killed the Bijapur general Afzal Khan, and his forces then defeated the Bijapuri army. The fort became a symbol of early Maratha power and contains a temple of the goddess Bhavani.
