Gol Gumbaz

completed 1656 · 17th century

The Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of Sultan Muhammad Adil Shah of the Bijapur Sultanate at Bijapur in Karnataka, India, completed around 1656. Its great hemispherical dome, about 44 metres across, rests on a cube with four domed corner towers and is one of the largest domes of the pre-modern world. A gallery inside the dome carries the slightest whisper across the hall.
