Klarjeti
Klarjeti is a historic region of south-western Georgia in the lower Chorokhi valley, today mostly in Artvin Province, Turkey. From the early 9th century it was the base of the Bagratid princes, who rebuilt Artanuji and ruled with Byzantine titles, and its monasteries became centres of Georgian learning. Together with Tao it formed Tao-Klarjeti, from which the unified Georgian kingdom grew; it fell to the Ottomans in the 16th century.
