Koloniale Staten
The Koloniale Staten was the colonial legislature of Suriname, established in 1866. Most of its members were elected by a small electorate qualified by income and education, the rest appointed by the governor, so that it represented a narrow wealthy class. Universal suffrage was introduced in 1948, and the body became the parliament of autonomous Suriname, the forerunner of today's National Assembly.
