Under Ottoman rule, as Gümülcine, it had a mainly Muslim population, and in 1913 it was the seat of the short-lived Provisional Government of Western Thrace. It passed to Bulgaria and then to Greece in 1920, and it remains the centre of Greece's Muslim minority.
