Krajina
Krajina, meaning 'frontier', is the name given to the former lands of the Habsburg Military Frontier in Croatia, where Serb settlers served as border soldiers against the Ottomans from the 16th century. The Frontier was abolished in 1881, but the Serb communities remained, and in the 1990s they formed the breakaway Republic of Serbian Krajina, which was overrun by Croatian forces in 1995.
