Krak des Chevaliers

Krak des Chevaliers is a Crusader castle in western Syria, on a hill commanding the Homs Gap between the coast and the interior. The Count of Tripoli granted it to the Knights Hospitaller in 1142, and they rebuilt it into one of the most formidable fortresses of the Middle Ages. It fell to the Mamluk sultan Baybars in 1271 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
