Homs

Also known as Emesa

Homs, ancient Emesa, is a city in western Syria on the Orontes river, commanding the Homs gap between the coast and the inland plains. In Roman times it was ruled by the Emesene dynasty and was the home of the sun god Elagabal, and in the Middle Ages it was the seat of Ayyubid emirs and the site of battles between the Mamluks and the Mongols. It is now Syria's third-largest city.
