Auxilia

Also known as auxiliary troops

The auxilia were the non-citizen troops of the Roman imperial army, recruited from provincial peoples. They provided infantry, cavalry and specialist units such as archers, serving alongside the citizen legions. After long service they received Roman citizenship, which helped integrate provincials into the Roman Empire.
