Kronstadt rebellion
The Kronstadt rebellion was a revolt in March 1921 by sailors, soldiers and workers of the naval fortress of Kronstadt near Petrograd against the Bolshevik government. Once celebrated supporters of the revolution, the rebels demanded freely elected soviets, freedom of speech and an end to grain requisitioning. The Red Army crushed the revolt by attacking across the ice, but it helped persuade Lenin to adopt the New Economic Policy.
