Kronborg

1574–1585 · 16th century · Also known as Kronborg Castle

Kronborg is a Renaissance castle at Helsingør on the narrowest point of the Øresund, where Denmark collected the Sound Toll from passing ships. Frederick II rebuilt an earlier fortress there between 1574 and 1585, and Christian IV restored it after a fire in 1629. Known as Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
