Kudungga

4th century · 4th century

Kudungga is the earliest known ruler of Kutai in eastern Borneo, named in the Sanskrit yupa inscriptions of his grandson Mulavarman from around 400. His name appears to be Indigenous rather than Indian, and the inscriptions credit his son Asvavarman, not him, with founding the dynasty, which suggests the family adopted Indian forms of kingship after his time.
