Kutaisi Governorate

1846–1918 · 19th century

The Kutaisi Governorate was a province of the Russian Empire in western Georgia, created in 1846 with its capital at Kutaisi. It covered the lands of the former kingdom of Imereti together with Mingrelia and Guria, and Kutaisi grew into the second city of Georgia. It lasted until the end of Russian rule in 1917–1918, when Georgia became independent.
