La Libertad Region
La Libertad is a region on the northern coast of Peru, extending inland into the Andes, with its capital at Trujillo. Its coastal valleys were the heartland of the Moche culture and later of the Chimú kingdom, whose capital Chan Chan lies near Trujillo. Its name, 'freedom', recalls Trujillo's early declaration of independence from Spain in 1820, and the region produces sugar, asparagus and gold.
