Junín Region
Junín is a region of central Peru, stretching from the Andean highlands around Lake Junín to the Amazonian forests of the east; its capital is Huancayo. Its high plateau was the scene of the Battle of Junín in August 1824, a cavalry victory of Simón Bolívar's forces over the royalists, after which the department was named. Its economy rests on mining, farming and the trade of the Mantaro valley.
