Lacandon Maya

The Lacandon Maya are a Maya people of the rainforest of eastern Chiapas in Mexico, near the Guatemalan border. They speak a Yucatecan Maya language and long kept their own religion and customs in relative isolation. In 1946 Lacandon guides led outsiders to the ruins of Bonampak, whose painted murals transformed the image of Classic Maya society.
