Lake Atitlán
Lake Atitlán is a deep crater lake in the highlands of south-western Guatemala, surrounded by volcanoes. From about the 13th century its southern shore was the heartland of the Tz'utujil Maya kingdom, whose capital stood at Chuitinamit near Santiago Atitlán. The Spanish under Pedro de Alvarado, with Kaqchikel allies, conquered the Tz'utujil there in 1524.
