c. 1485–1541 · 16th century

Pedro de Alvarado was a Spanish conquistador and lieutenant of Hernán Cortés in the conquest of the Aztec Empire, after which he subdued Tututepec. In 1524 he led the invasion of Guatemala, defeating the K'iche' with Kaqchikel allies and then turning on the Kaqchikel, and campaigned against the Tz'utujil and the Pipil of Cuzcatlan. As governor of Guatemala he was notorious for cruelty. He died in 1541 after being crushed by a horse in the Mixtón War.
