Mixtón War

1540–1542 · 16th century

The Mixtón War was a rising of the Caxcan and other indigenous peoples of north-western Mexico against Spanish rule in New Galicia from 1540 to 1542. The rebels, fortified on mountain strongholds such as the Peñol of Mixtón, beat back early Spanish attacks, and the conquistador Pedro de Alvarado died of injuries received in the fighting. Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza crushed the revolt with a large army of Spaniards and indigenous allies.
