Lazio

Also known as Latium

Lazio is a region of central Italy around Rome, its capital, stretching from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Ancient Latium was home to the Latins, from whom Rome emerged. For most of the Middle Ages and early modern period it formed the core of the Papal States, until its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1870.
