Leodegar

c. 615–679 · 7th century · Also known as Saint Leger, Leodegar of Autun

Leodegar, known in French as Saint Léger, was Bishop of Autun in Merovingian Gaul and a leading opponent of the mayor of the palace Ebroin. After years of conflict he was blinded, deposed and put to death in 679, and was soon venerated as a martyr. He became the patron saint of Lucerne, whose monastery and later collegiate church, the Hofkirche, are dedicated to him.
