Gotthard Pass
The Gotthard Pass is a 2,106-metre pass in the Swiss Alps linking Uri in the north with Ticino in the south. It became a major trade route around 1230, after a bridge was built across the Schöllenen gorge, giving the valley communities of central Switzerland strategic value. Railway (1882), road (1980) and base (2016) tunnels later made it Europe's chief north–south Alpine crossing.
