Gotthard Railway

1882 · 19th century · Also known as Gotthardbahn

The Gotthard Railway is a Swiss trans-Alpine line linking central Switzerland with Ticino and Italy, opened in 1882. Its summit tunnel, about fifteen kilometres long, was built between 1872 and 1882 under the engineer Louis Favre, at the cost of many workers' lives. It became a principal route between northern Europe and Italy, and since 2016 the Gotthard Base Tunnel has carried most through traffic.
