Edward Whymper

1840–1911 · 19th century

Edward Whymper was an English mountaineer, engraver and author. On 14 July 1865 he led the first ascent of the Matterhorn, but four of his party were killed on the descent when a rope broke, a disaster that made the climb famous. His book Scrambles amongst the Alps popularised Alpine climbing, and he later explored the Andes of Ecuador and the Canadian Rockies.
