1517–1587 · 16th century

Gotthard Kettler was the last Master of the Livonian Order. During the Livonian War, with Russia invading, he placed Livonia under Poland-Lithuania by the Union of Vilnius in 1561 and secularised the order. In return he became the first Duke of Courland and Semigallia, a Polish-Lithuanian fief, and governor of Livonia, and introduced Lutheranism.
