Anna of Russia

1693–1740 · 18th century · Also known as Anna Ioannovna

Anna Ioannovna was Empress of Russia from 1730 to 1740, a niece of Peter the Great. Before her accession she was duchess of Courland, having married its duke, who died in 1711. As empress she tore up the conditions the nobles had tried to impose on her and relied on German advisers, above all her favourite Ernst Johann von Biron, whom she made duke of Courland in 1737.
