Abylai Khan

c. 1711–1781 · 18th century · Also known as Ablai Khan

Abylai Khan was a Kazakh ruler of the Middle Juz and a hero of the wars against the Dzungars, during which he was for a time held prisoner by them. After the Qing destroyed the Dzungar state in the 1750s, he balanced skilfully between Russia and China, acknowledging both, and in 1771 he was proclaimed khan of all three Kazakh juzes at Turkistan. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in Kazakh history.
