Liliʻuokalani
Liliʻuokalani was the only queen regnant and the last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruling from 1891 until the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. Born in Honolulu, she succeeded her brother David Kalākaua and sought a new constitution to restore the power of the monarchy and the voting rights of the economically disenfranchised. Pro-American residents organised as the Committee of Safety overthrew her in January 1893, backed by the landing of US Marines, and after a failed uprising she was placed under house arrest and forced to abdicate in 1895. She composed Aloha ʻOe and wrote the autobiography Hawaiʻi's Story by Hawaiʻi's Queen (1898).
