Lorenzino de' Medici

1514–1548 · 16th century · Also known as Lorenzaccio

Lorenzino de' Medici was a member of a junior branch of the Medici family who murdered his cousin Alessandro, Duke of Florence, in January 1537. He presented the deed as tyrannicide, but the republican exiles failed to profit from it, and Cosimo I de' Medici took power. Lorenzino fled abroad and was assassinated in Venice in 1548 by agents of Cosimo.
