Lorenzo de' Medici, called the Magnificent, was the effective ruler of the Republic of Florence from 1469 until his death. He survived the Pazzi conspiracy of 1478, in which his brother Giuliano was killed, and worked to keep peace among the Italian states through diplomacy. A poet and a patron of artists such as Botticelli and the young Michelangelo, he came to embody the Florentine Renaissance.
