Cosimo de' Medici

1389–1464 · 15th century · Also known as Cosimo the Elder

Cosimo de' Medici, called the Elder, was a Florentine banker who controlled the Republic of Florence from 1434 until his death without holding formal power for long. Head of the Medici Bank, then the largest in Europe, he governed through allies and manipulated councils and elections. A great patron of Brunelleschi, Donatello and humanist learning, he was honoured after his death as Pater Patriae, father of his country.
