Lorenzo Valla

c. 1407–1457 · 15th century

Lorenzo Valla was an Italian humanist, rhetorician and scholar. In 1440, while serving Alfonso V of Aragon at Naples, he proved by linguistic and historical analysis that the Donation of Constantine was a forgery. His Elegantiae linguae Latinae became a standard guide to classical Latin, and his critical notes on the New Testament influenced Erasmus. He later worked at the papal court in Rome.
