Louis IV, Landgrave of Hesse-Marburg

1537–1604 · 16th century

Louis IV was Landgrave of Hesse-Marburg from 1567 to 1604, the second son of Philip the Magnanimous, who received about a quarter of Hesse, centred on Marburg and its university, in the division of 1567. A strict Lutheran, he defended orthodoxy against the Calvinist leanings of his brother in Kassel. He died childless, and the division of his lands between Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt caused decades of conflict.
