Lucius Licinius Murena (praetor 88 BCE)
Lucius Licinius Murena was a Roman commander who served under Sulla in the First Mithridatic War and was left as governor of Asia. In 83 BCE he attacked Pontus without clear authority, starting the Second Mithridatic War, and was defeated by Mithridates VI in 82 BCE. Sulla ordered him to stop, but he was nevertheless granted a triumph. His son of the same name was defended by Cicero in the speech Pro Murena.
