Licinius

c. 265–325 · 4th century · Also known as Licinius I, Valerius Licinianus Licinius

Licinius was Roman emperor from 308 to 324. In 313 he and Constantine the Great agreed the policy of religious toleration known as the Edict of Milan, and he went on to defeat Maximinus Daia and rule the eastern provinces. Rivalry with Constantine led to war; defeated at Adrianople and Chrysopolis, near Byzantium, in 324, he surrendered and was executed in 325.
