Luis Gálvez Rodríguez de Arias

1864–1935 · 20th century

Luis Gálvez Rodríguez de Arias was a Spanish journalist and adventurer in the Amazon. On 14 July 1899, backed by Brazilian rubber interests in Acre, then Bolivian territory, he proclaimed the Independent State of Acre at Puerto Alonso and made himself president. Brazil, then still recognising Bolivian sovereignty, sent forces that removed him in 1900. Acre passed to Brazil by the Treaty of Petrópolis in 1903.
