Madeira-Mamoré Railway
The Madeira-Mamoré Railway was a line of about 366 km built from 1907 to 1912 through the Amazon rainforest of Rondônia, Brazil, to bypass the rapids of the Madeira and Mamoré rivers. Brazil promised it to Bolivia in the Treaty of Petrópolis of 1903 to give Bolivian rubber an outlet to the Atlantic. Thousands of workers died of disease during its construction, and the line closed in 1972.
