Madeira

Madeira is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of north-west Africa. Portuguese navigators settled it in the early fifteenth century, making it one of the first possessions of the Portuguese Empire. It became a centre of sugar production, a model later applied in other Atlantic colonies.
