Maranao people
The Maranao are a Muslim people of the Philippines whose homeland is the region around Lake Lanao on Mindanao; their name means 'people of the lake'. They accepted Islam from the 16th century and organised themselves into many small sultanates that long resisted Spanish and American rule. The Maranao are known for brass work, weaving, the okir style of decorative carving and the epic Darangen.
