Marco Polo Bridge Incident
The Marco Polo Bridge Incident was a clash between Chinese and Japanese troops near the Lugou Bridge south-west of Beijing on the night of 7 July 1937. Fighting spread after negotiations failed, and Japan sent reinforcements to north China. The incident is generally taken as the start of the full-scale Second Sino-Japanese War, which merged into the Second World War.
