Marie Antoinette

1755–1793 · 18th century

Marie Antoinette (1755–1793) was queen of France as the wife of Louis XVI. A daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria, she married the future king in 1770 to seal the Franco-Austrian alliance and became a target of popular hostility for her extravagance and opposition to reform. After the fall of the monarchy she was tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined on 16 October 1793.
