1878–1950 · 20th century

Mario Lago was an Italian diplomat and governor of the Italian Islands of the Aegean, the Dodecanese, from 1922 to 1936. He invested in roads, farming, archaeology and public buildings, restoring the Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes and sponsoring Italian rationalist architecture. His relatively mild rule was followed by harsher Italianisation under Cesare Maria De Vecchi.
