Maryland State Colonization Society
The Maryland State Colonization Society was a branch of the American colonisation movement that from 1831 organised the emigration of free Black Americans from Maryland to Africa, with funds from the state legislature. In 1834 it founded a colony at Cape Palmas in West Africa, with James Hall as its first agent. The colony became the independent Republic of Maryland in 1854 and joined Liberia in 1857.
