Matthias, Holy Roman Emperor

1557–1619 · 16th century

Matthias was Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 to 1619 and King of Hungary and Bohemia, a son of Emperor Maximilian II. As archduke he challenged his brother Rudolf II and in 1608, backed by the estates of Hungary, Austria and Moravia, forced Rudolf to cede him those lands. His reign ended amid the Bohemian revolt that began the Thirty Years' War.
