Mattium
Mattium was the chief settlement of the Chatti, a Germanic people of what is now northern Hesse. Tacitus records that Germanicus burned it in 15 CE during his campaigns across the Rhine, but Rome never brought the Chatti under lasting control. Its site is uncertain, though it is often sought near Fritzlar or Gudensberg.
