Maubeuge

Maubeuge is a town on the Sambre in the Nord department of northern France, formerly part of the County of Hainaut. It grew around a seventh-century convent founded by Saint Aldegund and became a cloth town. France gained it by the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678, and Vauban fortified it. Besieged in 1793 and in 1914, it remains an industrial town near the Belgian border.
